GROTTOES — A vigilant neighbor noticed smoke coming out of the roof of a home on Fountain Cave Road and alerted area first responders shortly after 1 p.m. The homeowner was out at the time.
When firefighters arrived they reported smoke visible from the rafters, but were able to contain the blaze within minutes.
"These old farm houses, they're hard to deal with," said Lt. C.W. Stephenson of Augusta County Fire Department, gesturing to a spot above a first floor window, where the fire had started to burn the siding. Stephenson said that flames can travel up the side of a building and quickly spread.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene from Grottoes, Augusta County, New Hope, Weyers Cave, Rockingham County and McGaheysville.
